As a locally certified HVAC company with years of experience serving Tucson, we are the best choice for heat pump and furnace repair. Most homes have HVAC systems that can provide heating and cooling. Typically, a home that uses an air conditioner for cooling is paired with a gas-powered furnace for heating.

A heat pump, however, differs in that it provides both home heating and cooling within the same system. Here at Southern Comfort, we handle all HVAC system repairs whether you use a heat pump or furnace–we have you covered! Call us today for a free inspection or 24/7 emergency service at 520-406-9858.

What is a Heat Pump?

As the name suggests, a heat pump is an electrically powered system that provides both heating and cooling. Your heat pump works by essentially moving heat from one place to another as needed. The heat pump is technically a mechanical-compression cycle refrigeration system absorbs and releases heat as it travels between indoor and outdoor units.

The heat pump system requires an indoor unit, called the air handler, and an outdoor unit, much like an air conditioner, called the heat pump. In colder weather, however, the exchange method is completely reversed. The heat pump will collect heat from the outer air and transfer it inside of your home.

Contrary to popular belief, even when it feels incredibly cold outside there is still enough heat in the air for a heat pump to extrapolate warmer molecules and send them inside of your home.

As an extremely efficient process that has been re-designed over time in modern systems, heat pumps produce three times as much heat as the energy it expends to be under use. There are advantages to each system, but a heat pump system is generally better for our warmer Southern Arizona climate.

That’s because a heat pump operates essentially the same as an air conditioner for cooling. However, for heating, the heat pump is generally more efficient than a furnace until outside temperatures fall below freezing–which rarely occurs here in Tucson.

What is a Furnace in a Home?

The furnace is a heating system that heats air in one area and distributes the heated air throughout your home. The heated air is sent through the ventilation system of ductwork and vents.

The most common furnaces are gas-powered. Typically, a furnace works alongside an air conditioner unit to provide home heating while the AC does the cooling. The main components of your furnace are the control system with the thermostat and control panel, the burners, heat exchanger, gas valve, blower, and the ventilation system.

As the furnace creates heat, the combustion gases are vented out through the flue pipe. There are a number of ways that your furnace can malfunction such as electrical problems, a faulty sensor, or a clogged filter. Whatever the issue, our certified technicians are equipped to quickly diagnose the problem and fix it.

How to Tell If Your Heat Pump is Going

There are many conditions when a heat pump would start to malfunction or go out. We will discuss a few below:

Heat Pump Stops or Trips Breaker
It’s fairly common for a heat pump to stop working in extremely cold weather if it’s defrost cycle is not working or under extreme load. Another issue could also be an extreme or insufficient power draw that trips the breaker. Both issues can lead to your air conditioners heat pump stopping or freezing-up.
Heat Pump Blower
Another issue with heat pumps can be the blower. While a malfunctioning thermostat can lead to inconsistent issues with the functionality of your heat pump, a clogged air intake can also cause similar issues.
Heat Pump Noises
Another issue you may experience with heat pumps is a squealing noise. This is most commonly due to the heat pumps ball bearings going out. Because most ducts are also metal, it can lead to increased noise output and the issue may seem more severe than it is

Repair Issues with Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are a fundamentally different system than a gas-powered furnace. However, there are still several similar repair problems that can plague heat pumps. For example, you will want to check all the electrical-related troubleshooting options.

First, be sure the thermostat settings are set to what you need. Since the heat pump handles both heating and cooling, you want to make sure it is set to “Heat” for heating and “Cool” for cooling. Be sure to check the power as well.

Check that the thermostat has functioning batteries for battery operated types, and check your home’s circuit breaker for unresponsive systems. Sometimes, heat pumps are connected to a power switch in your home. If this is the case, be sure to keep that switch on.

Common Repair Problems with Furnaces

Your furnace may face a variety of issues that lead to malfunction. Some require simple fixes and repairs, while some issues are best resolved with replacing the old system. The following are some of the most common issues we’ve seen:

Lack of Maintenance:

It is important to schedule annual furnace maintenance and inspections. This will help prevent unexpected problems and breakdowns. Regular inspections by a qualified professional, such as a Southern Comfort technician, will help your furnace continue to run efficiently and reliably.

Dirty Filters:

Dirty air filters is a routine issue that can negatively impact the heating performance of your furnace. Leaving a clogged filter can also damage the limit switch, which controls the fan. So it is important to check and switch out air filters regularly to avoid other issues.

Normal Wear and Tear:

Even the best furnaces experience wear over time. Airflow and heating performance tend to diminish over years of use, so it’s important to get professional inspections both for the quality of your system and to keep energy costs down.

Electric Ignition/Pilot Control Issues:

A malfunctioning ignition or pilot could results in inconsistent heating for your furnace. This is one of the most common problems leading to a furnace that won’t heat. Fortunately, there are several straightforward solutions to correcting a faulty ignition or pilot control.

Malfunctioning Thermostat:

When the thermostat is not in tune with the furnace several poor outcomes may result.

A Furnace Not Producing Heat:

Often, a furnace that won’t heat has problems with the thermostat setting, power, gas or the pilot light. Whatever the issue, we are adept at troubleshooting and fixing the issue quickly for you.

The Furnace Fails to Heat Adequately:

Clogged filters can mute the home heating power of your furnace. In addition, insufficiently sized furnaces will struggle to heat a larger home.

Cycling On and Off Frequently:

When your furnace turns on and off often, it may indicate a clogged filter, poor airflow, or a faulty thermostat.

The Blower Continuously Runs:

Blower issues may indicate a problem with the limit switch, which a professional may need to replace.

Noisy Furnace:

If you hear sounds of scraping, squeaking, or rumbling from your furnace, then something is wrong. Such noises may indicate airflow reductions, a clogged burner, or other mechanical issues.

How To Repair a Furnace

There are a number of ways to help with your furnace’s performance. For example, it is essential that you clean or replace the air filters regularly. In fact, most gas heater furnaces should have their air filters cleaned or placed monthly!

A furnace repair technician can show you how to this. For another quick fix, be sure to make sure the batteries are working in your thermostat as some models are battery-operated. If your furnace seems to cycle to quickly, be sure to make sure the fan setting is on auto.

Any other setting may leave the fan running, continuously wasting energy, and affecting the furnace’s efficiency. Make sure to double-check all the thermostat settings. If you need heat, make sure “Heat” is selected and your target temperature is higher than the current room temp.

Home Furnace Troubleshooting

There are a few more troubleshooting tips for your gas heater furnace. If, for example, your furnace stops working altogether, or if the thermostat appears to be shut off, you should check your circuit breaker. See if any fuse has been tripped or blown.

Be sure to keep your home well-insulated while using the furnace. Keep all windows and doors closed to avoid over-working your furnace and wasting energy. If you suspect a natural gas or propane leak, be sure to call a professional right away to avoid any dangerous outcomes.

For issues related to the ignition control or pilot light and mechanical difficulties, we recommend calling a qualified furnace specialist for help. Our technicians are fully trained and experienced with furnace repair. So when you can’t resolve the issue, just give us a call anytime 24/7 for services.
